Nature2 Pool

I have a 28,000 gallon pool with Nature2 filter built one year ago. This was recommended to me by our pool builder (as opposed to having a saltwater system). I had terrible scale buildup over the first year, at least that's what I would call it. Just abundant white, chalky flakes of material in the pool. The guy who services my pool thought it was do to the type of chorine shock I was using which had calcium in it. He recommended I switch to another type of shock; so far that has improved things a bit. Has anyone ever had this problem with a new pool? What is your experience with a Nature2 system? Thanks for your advice!

Hi Dawg,

You won't find any Nature2 fans on this forum. Nature2 uses copper and other minerals to supposedly prevent algae from growing and allow you to run lower chlorine levels in your pool. What it actually does is add enough copper to your pool to create staining conditions (copper is what turns blonde hair and fingernails green, not high chlorine!) and compicate the water chemistry, and may or may not kill bacteria, but does not kill viruses. So...while you may be able to run lower levels of chlorine and not have algae growing, you will not be able to run lower levels and keep the pool sanitary enough for me to be comfortable swimming in it.

You can use the google link in my sig to search the forum for Nature2 users who have posted. You will find lots of results, but very, very few of them will be positive. Until your registration is upgraded, you'll have to log out to read the search results, but that's a temporary inconvenience.

Odds are that the white scaling was calcium, but without a set of water results, taken with a drop-based kit, as well as a list of what you've been using in the pool, it is impossible for us to do anything but guess. I doubt it had anything to do with the Nature2.

We don't recommend Nature2 units, but it's unlikely that your unit had anything to do with the pool problems you're having. Do this:

1. Complete the Pool Chart, so we can tell what you have:

2. Get a good test kit -- 'guess-strips' don't count, no matter WHO reads them or HOW they are read:
+ Get a cheap OTO (yellow drops) / phenol test kit, or if available at YOUR Walmart (check availability), get the HTH 6-way DROPS test kit, which is compatible with the Taylor K2006. Test the pool as soon and you can, and post the results. If you get the 6-way kit, ALSO test the water you FILL the pool with, especially if it's a well, and post THOSE results as well. (The HTH is the best available kit you're likely to find locally, but it's not the K-2006. It can only provide rough measurements chlorine levels above 5 ppm, and it measures "TOTAL" hardness, rather than "CALCIUM" hardness, which is not ideal.)

3. List the chemicals you've been using over the last 2 months, by EXACT pool chemical name and EXACT brand. (Similar sounding chemicals can have VERY different ingredients and effects.)
