Unhappy I screwed up, EC-65 filter is cracked (please help!)

I have been a pool owner and operator for many years, but somehow last year I forgot to drain my Hayward EC-65. When I went to turn it on this year the first sign of trouble was that the elbow joint connecting the Super Pump to the EC-65 was completely cracked at the threads. I finally got another elbow I had lying around to sort-of fit (enough to test the rest of the system) when I saw that the tank of the EC-65 was cracked and leaking.

Now I am searching for any way to repair this crack (or perhaps even more than one crack) and I am terrified that I may have also cracked the underground water lines which have a lot of concrete over them and would be hard to fix.

I am very upset about this, does anyone know if it is possible to seal those cracks? Or can you tell me what material the tank is made out of so I can get an epoxy for it?

    Thanks very much!

The lesson: at least drain your filter (I am bringing mine indoors for the winter from now on!)

I always bring mine in the shed for the winter drained and disassembled.
Im not sure if there is an epoxy that will cope with the pressure.

I must be lucky cause I havent disassembled and taken my ec65 in for the winter in 7 years and mines seems to be fine. (I inherited this pool with the house and have learned everything I know through online forums)

Will have to start this year though.

    Cracks in a case, yeah.

Cracks in a thread, I wouldn't even attempt. The only way I know to fix threads involves grinding out the crack, refilling with appropriate high strength suitable patch . . . and then re-tapping the threads.

Nope, wouldn't even think about attempting it on a customer piece of equip -- odds are, it wouldn't be completely satisfactory and the customer would be ill (because he paid me) or I'd be (because he didn't).

    Sorry.

Typically you don't have to bring it inside. I live in the frozen northeast and the most we ever had to do was drain the system for winter. My problems this year are because we haven't opened the pool fully in a number of years since we had an illness and death in the family, and that I believe the system was left with some water in it last year.

Now that I have spent $500 on a new filter and will soon be spending another $360+ on a new pump and possibly new valves I will be taking much better care of the equipment. I plan on disassembling it all and storing it indoors for the winter, and doing a full winterization on the pipes and water.

It can be noted though that this pump and filter had no problem being stored outdoors with no cover from 1994 to 2007 (and possibly as long as the 2009/2010 winter season).

How do you suggest patching cracks in the case? I have a DEL 60 that has recently sprung a leak in the lower tank. The part is no longer made, so I am looking for a fix.

Probably your best shot is pool epoxy putty, applied from the inside into the crack, so the water pushes it tighter.
