Copper has been used in commercial pools for YEARS, but as mentioned, not common these days.
You may try researching Pasco Ram Bit. A little expensive but can do what you're looking to do.

I ended up using a 1" PVC pipe. After I shaved its OD down a bit with a belt sander, I was able to shove it inside my old return and from then on used standard adapters to build up my eyeball returns.
