I'm not going to 'slam' the idea, because I've never heard of it nor tried it. However I have said a couple of times here that undercharging or overcharging a DE filter will eventually lead to trouble. I suppose that they are saying "if you need to backwash every 2 hours, don't waste the $ on putting in the full amount of DE since you're just going to dump it in a couple hours". De is relatively inexpensive (have you filled your car's gas tank lately?) and having a less than full coating of DE on the membranes is asking for trouble, if you get a bunch of algae on the grids/ fingers you'll end up having to break the filter down and at least manually clean them, if not having to chemically soak them to get the performance back up to par.
I wrote up a "use and care for DE filters" document this past winter, if you ask nice I'll post it here![]()
Are you currently battling a 'swamp' with a DE filter? if so, which kind and what's the sq. ft.?
