De is relatively inexpensive (have you filled your car's gas tank lately?) and having a less than full coating of DE on the membranes is asking for trouble, if you get a bunch of algae on the grids/ fingers you'll end up having to break the filter down and
at least manually clean them, if not having to chemically soak them to get the performance back up to par.
I wrote up a "use and care for DE filters" document this past winter, if you ask nice I'll post it here
Are you currently battling a 'swamp' with a DE filter? if so, which kind and what's the sq. ft.?
Thanks, waste, and I'm asking nicely

Tomorrow the pro and I are going to open the pool and I already know by now that I have the swamp. Here's why:
I live in the NE and we didn't finish cleaning up the leaves last fall because snow started early. During winter it rained and snowed a lot. My mesh type pool cover is now touching the water level (it rose up significantly during winter) and there's a lot of flora on top. It's green above and below.
This is my third pool opening and my first green pool.
I already had the pink one last summer and I overcame it so I'm not faint of heart...
My filter is Anthony Apollo VA 38 with 38 Sq Ft area (I confirmed by measuring to be on the safe side.)
According to what everybody is saying I need to use about 8 lbs of DE per load, right?
This is my ticket for Heaven (when all's working..) :
22k Gal gunite IGP
38 SF DE filter, 1 HP Hayward Super Pump
Raypak 350k BTU Natural Gas Heater and solar cover
8 gal Liquidator with bleach
Dolphin robotic cleaner
Taylor k-2006 test kit
