I've seen a commercial product filter bag for the returns but have not read about a homebrew alternative. Knee highs are thin, if you cut off the thicker part near the ankle maybe it is thin enough to screw right into the socket.

Thumbs up Re: Not wearing panty hose

Chuck, you can secure the nylon hose to the return with a rubber band. I use knee highs and secure them by the reinforced top so that there is plenty of material left in the pool to collect whatever may be bypassing the filter and still have enough room so that the pump doesn't blow a partially filled stocking off of the inlet (thereby ruining the test)

I hope this is more in line with what you were asking

thanks everyone for your replies.. didn't mean to snap at anyone.. I am just so frustrated with the pool this year.. It has been a breeze for the last 4.. but I am seriously considering going back to mowing that part of my yard.. might be easier than figuring out this problem.

From researching here.. I probably have a problem in the filter.. that's causing the sand to blow out into the pool. But.. I really don't look forward to opening up the filter and investigating.. I am not very mechanical.. Is there a step by step guide to filter maintenance anywhere?

A guess but thinking its your laterals?.....Is it blowing air bubbles back in or anything else? When you backwash do you run a rinse cycle for very long before turning the multiport back to filter? I did in fact see a post or two here from one of the guys Al or Dave maybe? that went into a pretty good detail on how to check....Maybe use the search and check "laterals"

Janet's post in another thread details how to service the filter.
It is titled... for those with sand blowing back..... you may have already found it.
We had problems with sand flowing in pool this year too. We replaced the multiport valve, gasket and checked the laterals after emptying sand using wet dry vac and replaced sand. (We decided to replace valve because it was cracking from exposure to elements)
It wasn't too big of a job, but then again, I was just the gopher

A little kindness when clarifying someones mistake may help you to get the help you are requesting.
