Anna, I'm thinking it's supposed to be about 2/3 full of sand--at least that's what mine seems to be.
My filter is a 19" sand filter. What does that mean???
Does it refer to inside diameter? Height? Depth of sand bed?
And how much sand goes in a 19" filter? I wasn't there when the PB set it up and have no idea how many bags or pounds of sand he put in.
I hate being so clueless about an integral piece of equipment.

Next time we have it open I'll have to see how much is in there.

I'm gonna be curious to see how much sand is left in mine when we open it in the next few days. It has not been opened since it was first filled 11 years ago. I'm sure it will be low on sand after this many years!
19" in diameter -- probably 200# of sand.
You'll want the sand to be 6" below the point where the water comes into the top of the filter.
What make/model is it -- there's probably a manual online -- I may already have it!

Thanks Ben. Not sure about the make/model, I'll check next time I'm up on the hill. I do have a manual but it's not very informative.
