Oxidizes like bleach, but doesn't sanitize like bleach.

It's also garbage that shouldn't be used in your pool.

The greatest result of these "Non Chlorine Shocks" in an outdoor pool are measured in the amount of dollars leaving your wallet....

Shocking is simply raising your Free Chlorine (FC) level high enough to kill off any Combined Chlorine (CC) which is the used up by products of the FC doing it's job. Yes, use chlorine to shock, preferably liquid and most find regular ole 6% ultra bleach is the easiest and cheapest way to go.

P.S.- I've now only "shocked" once this entire season, since April 1st. If you stay ahead (as CarlD says) you shouldn't have to "shock" very often.

Ok, thank you very much for the info; as I am barnd new I will clarify what i need to do:
buy liquid chlorine shock and use once a week? Do I just pour it straight in? and is it fine with the vinyl pool and the SWG?

    szcakes,

Welcome to the forum! A couple of things. First, why do you think you need to shock? Second, how high do you need to shock too?
I'll bet that last one really got ya scratching your head.

It sounds as if you need to be "poolforumcated". Take your time this evening and read the following links:

You can buy liquid chlorine, or just use plain, unscented bleach, whichever is cheaper in your area. You can pour it into the skimmer, slowly around the perimeter (stirring to eliminate hot pockets), or pour it into the stream from your return--it's up to you. It's fine with a vinyl pool as long as you don't overdo it (see the best guess chart to see how much to add based on your CYA level), and it's fine with the SWG.

You only need to shock it if you have a CC above .5, or your water is getting cloudy....I also shock mine after a large bather load and after a heavy storm, just as a preventative measure.

Non chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate, MPS) will not destry chloramines. It works by oxidizing organics before they combine with the FC. This means that you always have to have a residual of the MPS in the water for it to work right. This info is right from the Dupont Oxone website. They developed and manufacture MPS under the name Oxone! It is more expensive and, IMHO, not as effective as using chlorine to shock. It might be useful in a non stabilized indoor pool but even that is debatable.
It IS useful with bromine to reactivate the bromine bank but plain liquid chlorine does the same thing for less money!
