    Default Replacement filter system recommendation

I've got a System3 cartridge filter that has sprung a leak in the lower casing. I've tried and a couple of repairs but it's started leaking again. The replacement casing isn't cheap (~$500-600) so I'm thinking given it's at least 20 years old maybe the smart move is to replace the whole thing with something newer, and hopefully better, for not much more than the cost of the lower casing.

I was in my local pool supply store at the weekend buying o-rings and happened to mention it, they suggested that while the System3 was great "in it's day" the newer filters are far superior. They suggested a Jacuzzi J-CQ420 which they would gleefully sell me for $900 installed.

I'm hoping to get some advice on whether it seems like a good idea to replace the System3, and if so, is their suggestion a good one?

    Thanks

System 3 cartridge systems are -- in most locations -- just about the worst possible option. I'm amazed you've stuck with one for 20 years (I didn't think they'd been around that long).

Your location and local codes determine the best options, in many respects.

Sand filters are BY FAR the easiest and most durable, BUT you have to be able to dispose of backwash without running afoul of regulations and restrictions. DE filters -- even the StaRite DE filter that uses the same case -- produce noticeably clearer water, but in shallow pools the difference is not great, and they do best if the pump runs 24/7 (low speed is OK).
