Default New User :) Question on best product to get rid of iron in a pool

    Hi-

I know that the element that is causing the problem in the pool (Vinyl liner) is iron. We have well water and had it tested. What is the best product for managing the iron issue. (I realize it just suspends the iron, not get rid of it)

"Jack's Magic" has been suggested to me. Any thoughts??

    Thank you

    . . . . membership updated.

Jack's Magic is a brand, not a particular product. And like all other metal 'removal' products, the Jack's Magic line is something rather less than 'magic'!

The problem is that removing stains is not the same as removing the metals from your pool. Here are the steps involved:

    1. Remove chlorine (and add algeacide) because most effective 'stain removers' are not chlorine compatible.

    2. Use 'stain remover' to re-dissolve metal salts, moving them from the pool stains back into the pool water. (Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is often used)

    3. Chelate the dissolved metals, so they will remain in the water after chlorine is restored.

    4. Remove the metals from the pool water by (a) depositing them on the filter, (b) by grabbing them via ion exchange (CuLator), or (c) precipitating them with a floc like alum (tricky, and rarely done).

    5. Prevent re-occurrence by identifying and correcting source (often fill water.)

Like other pool products, each Jack's Magic product can -- at best -- perform ONE step in this process. And unfortunately, even when this is done successfully (with or without Jack's Magic), it's often not completely successful, and has to be repeated.

There's more info in the 'stick' posts in this section.
