Default Looking for info/advice on repairing underground pipe leak

I am researching info needed to repair a leak on the return side that allows the pool to lose an inch or more per day. I have plugged the outlets and stopped the leak so I know those are my issue. Trying to get a handle on the repair before I dig up the paver patio that is over top the pipe.

Normally, you'd cut out the leaking section and splice in a new piece. Exactly how you do this depends on the pipe: S40 PVC is different than black poly.

I have recently come across telescoping pvc repair couplings, are these worth it underground if I don't have a lot of room to move the pipe to assist in getting a good seal. I'd prefer to dig up as little as possible. Thoughts?

Yes! They can be a lifesaver! (Well, almost. Certainly a 'hand' saver, in terms of blisters avoided!)

But . . . get American made products ONLY. I was a licensed master plumber for 30 years . . . and I *still* learned the hard way that you absolutely do NOT want to put Chinese made plumbing products under ground!. That junk I used was Watts brand (an old US brand), but Chinese made. Had to go back into that hole (mud pit!) on my father's water line twice.

Also, watch your pressure ratings. On gizmos like those, if they say 50 psi max . . . they MEAN it.

    Here are US-made options:

King Brothers QF-1500 PVC Quik-Fix Telescoping Repair Coupling, White, 1-1/2-Inch
King Brothers QF-2000 PVC Quik-Fix Telescoping Repair Coupling, White, 2-Inch

Thank you very much for the info on American made. I guess I am just concerned about the joint not being long term because if the o-rings and if it were to flex. Am I being overly concerned?

So am I being too concerned with them leaking over time due to having orings and possible flex? It sure would make my repair simpler.

Presumably the pipe is laying straight in the ground. If it's 'sprung', then yes that could be a problem. In that case, I'd use a union like this:
Spears 497 Series PVC Union with EPDM O-Ring, Schedule 40, 1.5"
BUT . . . you'll have to be careful with your cutting and spacing. You may have to use TWO unions, in order to create a drop in section.

Be sure to cut cleanly at 90 degrees,, to chamfer the outer edge of the cut, and to use BOTH primer and glue. Also be VERY careful not to get EITHER glue or cleaner into the union threads or joint.
