Under liner support straps

I have a 16' x 32' Kayak rectangle pool, and this winter one of the support straps running under the liner broke. I called Kayak but they want more to ship them than they cost, as they are 16' + long. Anyone know what size and material they are? I haven't been able to get the liner out yet to measure them. I am hoping I can buy something from a local metal shop and make my own. Thoughts?

Restaurant equipment fab shops, that specialize in working in stainless could make something that would work -- but you'll probably have to design AND DRAW it for them. A local shop has made many things for me over the years, but always take the "we just make whatever you draw" approach to it.

Home Depot sells a construction strapping material that I have used hundreds of times with no problems. It's inexpensive and perfect for replacing the straps on an oval pool.

I know the Simpson line is HEAVILY galvanized, and will last much longer than electroplated junk, if not quite as long as SS straps. (But MUCH cheaper!)

That's the stuff Ben, I always had some on my truck. I would attach it to the brace channels with heavy duty self tapping screws. Once a channel is properly set it's next to impossible to get under it to hold a nut in place. I would cut the old straps with tin snips and lay the new one over the top of the channel. I would cut the new one as long as I could, almost rail to opposite rail. This allowed plenty of room for using multiple screws.

I checked to find a smaller roll and a 25' one is only $20.00. Twenty bucks for one strap and problem solved.

How do you replace the strap without draining the pool?

Huh? Without draining the pool? What you mean? This kind of operation requires an empty pool and more than likely a new liner. When a pool is so old it is busting a brace strap, it is old. It is important at this time to check the whole pool for rust problems. Does the wall need sanding and paint? Does it need reinforcement installed around the bottom? How do the footplates look? Are they holding the uprights tight and secure? It's time to look the whole pool over very closely.

I say this because in forty years installing above grounds I seldom saw broken straps. I know it happens, but it is not common. When it does happen I would take a close look at the rest of the pool.

I carried the strapping material because so many of the oval pools I installed did not have straps. They were meant for deep ends, with no straps connecting the braces. We installed a lot of these pools flat bottom. Anytime there was not a deep area between braces I would add a strap. It was just a little extra protection, making sure the pool would stay in place for many years to come.

It's all good, trust me, I know how it goes. After your post I rushed back to the top to check the facts. It did say "one strap" and "will measure when liner is out". After that I was just joking.

I hope the OP received enough info to solve the pool problem, that is what we do here.
