Lightbulb What would cause this to happen?

Long story short....Im draining my 18x52 inch pool had everything was gravy... .until it wasn't...

The rubber gasket (the one that is is usually with the diffuser) had been halfway sucked into the motor. I hooked everything back up, turned on the pump it worked for another hour and a half before the same gasket got sucked Into the motor...so what is causing this?

    Does anyone know?

No idea, really. If I was guessing, I'd say the most likely cause was a mis-assembled pump, and the next most likely cause would be a pump that was defective.
