Default Hayward s166t lateral assembly center pipe

Can a center pipe be repaired with 1.5 inch PVC? Mine cracked, I repaired, put back together...on start up it works but as it runs more and more air enter the system. No leaks anywhere. Strainer lid and o-ring seem ok....help please
