Ideally you need to get a good test kit to know how to accurately dose your pool. Assuming you currently have no chlorine and no cya then you would need to get to 10ppm for "shock" based on the chart here: http://www.poolsolutions.com/gd/best...e-chart.html#a In 40,000 gallons of water that's a little over 6 gallons of 6% "ultra" bleach. You may need significantly more if you have stabilizer (CYA) in the water. Also, you're going to need to be able to test your water and add more chlorine frequently. What you add will be quickly used up killing off the algae. If you can test and add chlorine 2 or more times a day, you'll be doing yourself a favor. That's where having a good test kit comes into play.
