Need pump & filter recommendations

I bought an Intex 15' steel framed pool on a whim last Spring and you all know those cartridge pumps are so worthless. It worked okay with my being vigilant with testing chemicals etc. I'm looking for a good pump and filter system for my 15' 42" pool. I've looked into the Hayward and I'm wondering which would work best and how easy is it to convert with Intex having their own sized fittings etc. I also want to know what I'll need to do to be able to hook a vacuum to the skimmer connection (mine hangs over the side) so I don't have to use that silly little bag and garden hose.
