I'd be interested to know what happened. DE powder can be useful when used with AG pool sand filters . . . but only for removing DEAD algae. Live algae stops up DE very quickly.

DE powder can also be used to *test* a sand filter -- if the DE blows back into the pool, the filter needs service!
