Dead algae can be hard to filter. The sand filters with AG pools can be especially bad for this, since they are often too small for the pumps, and the small particles get forced through the filter.

    For now, do these things:

    1. Get a cheap local OTO / phenol red kit (yellow / red drops)
    2. Get 16 gallons of PLAIN 8.25% bleach
    3. Remember (write down) these figures: 17,000 gallons; PF=7
    4. Add 2 gallons of bleach this PM, and then 1 gallon every following PM, till we've worked out another plan.
    5. If your pump has 2 speeds, turn it to low speed, but leave the filter on 24/7
    6. If not, add more DE, and see if the DE shoots back into the pool via the returns (where the water returns to the pool)
    7. Post test results (OTO), a list of ALL the chemicals you've used, and the results of the DE test.

Did you do the DE test on your filter?

High chlorine will help clear your pool, if there is still live algae. But if it's all dead, and simply being forced through your filter by the typical above-ground 'over-sized pump / under-sized filter' combo -- chlorine won't help clear the pool. (You STILL must maintain chlorine, to avoid growing a NEW crop of algae!)

Do the DE test. (#6 above)

We just had a 27'x54" agp installed 2 1/2 weeks ago with a sand filter the pump is 2hp......our pool was filled with creek water since we live on a well....it's was brown at first now it's a cloudy blue and it's driving me nuts I have had the water tested numerous times and every time they say the water has the perfect chemistry!! I just had the water tested this past Friday and it was showing very low chlorine levels they believe something is eating up all the chlorine I put rapid shock in and added de to the skimmer basket and then woke up this morning after turning the filter off overnight and the bottom was a brownish color which we vacuumed and it stirred everything right back up I'm ready to give up I put 3 gallons of 8.25% bleach in and now you can start to see the bottom but its still cloudy..please help I'm desperate!!! ....we have a hayward sand filter 2hp pump 17,250 gallons of water ag pool.....here are the results from tf100

    cya: 60
    Ta: 100
    FC: 19.5
    Cc: .5
    Tc: 20
    Ph: 7.5
