I have an AG pool 18 x 34 oval. Test strips indicate everything in range except no free chloriine and cloudy water. Pool was perfectly ickear on July 4th. Many swimmers that day. Rain on and off every The pool is 16 yrs old and have had good success until tis year with balancing water. Help please what to do about no free chlorine.

Add 1 gallon of 8.25% PLAIN household bleach (Walmart is fine, and the bleach is fresh usually) each EVENING till you hold chlorine levels overnight.

Use a cheap local OTO/phenol red (yellow / red drops) to test. You need to quickly get to the dark yellow levels.

AND . . . read the Best Guess page linked in my signature. You probably need a K2006 test kit, but you'll have a better idea after reading the BG page.

    Ben,
    Thank you for your reply.
Before I read your reply, I back washed cleaned hayward filter. Then added DE (3 lbs) to the skimmer. I let pump run about 1 hour, checked with strips - still no calorie. So I added 1 bag (1lb) of multi-shock. I tested the water about 20 minutes later. you guessed it- STILL NO CHLORINE according to strips.

I will try your suggestion today or tomorrow.
