I would make sure the site is very dry before applying it, and apply it inside the housing and outside the housing. It is very strong and impervious to water. Forgot something: Use Teflon tape when re-installing the drain plug. Also it won't look pretty, but spread the Marine Tex out at least half an inch from each side of the crack. Do you want it pretty or functional? Last time I bought pump housing it was going for over $200 list.
