Thanks Ben. I did replace the complete grids. I think the pressure guage is working fine, but just to rule it out, I ordered a new one today and will report back in a few when it arrives.

Sounds like a plan.
Take pictures, too!

The new Pentair PN 98209800 assembly (relief valve + gauge) came in today. Much to my surprise, the gauge from the new kit looks identical EXCEPT for where the "start" and "clean" marks are. The new gauge shows "start" at about 19 PSI, whereas the old one shows "start" at about 11 PSI. Now I'm really perplexed. If I were to put the new gauge on, it would show that my 22 PSI (that I thought was too high) is about right. I have a photo that I can post, but looks like my posting permission for attachments is currently disabled.
The vBulletin "attachment" system has caused me no end of problems, so I don't use it. You can post using Flickr, Picasa, Webshots, or any other non-porn US based photo service.

The outer black ring on the gauge is adjustable. You move it so the Start mark is equal to the pressure you see when the filter is clean and the Clean mark will tell you when to backwash.

Yeah, I did realize that the outer ring is adjustable shortly after I posted above, which makes sense since I guess expected pressures can vary. I finally found the time to replace the pressure guage today, and as I expected the new guage shows the same pressure as the old. But at least it's out of the equation.
Downstream of the DE filter
- Into Pentair multi-port valve model SM-20-2 (I opened this up - no blockage here)
- Out of MPV thru 2" PVC into Pentair Master Temp 250 heater
- Out of heater thru 2" PVC to checkvalve (says order number 172288 on it)
- Thru 2" to 1.5" reducer into Jandy valve actuator JVA 2444
- From actuator through chlorine feeder
- Into ground (still 1.5" PVC)
- About 22' to first eyeball
- Another 22' to second eyeball
- Another 20' to third eyeball (in spa)
- Another 6' to last eyeball
The pump is a Century Centurion 2HP model B855
I'm not real sure how the piping runs once it goes into the ground, so distances are approximate.
If you put the filter in bypass or recirculate mode, does the pressure drop?
Have you inspected the check valve to make sure it is working properly?
