Quick update. Each morning I can get the pump started by turning the switch less than a full turn and turning the breaker on and it starts.
Sounds like a bad capacitor to me.

Yup, capacitor prob. you can unplug the capacitor in the back cover of the motor. Test it with a multimeter if you like. $12 part. Make sure to get the correct replacement or itll blow up!
I assume the 'switch' you refer to is the starter switch and you are rotating the rotor. Sounds like you jiggle the switch in the process and it runs. Capacitors usually fail and do not fix themselves, that is, become inermittent. The centrifugal starter switch could have crummy contacts so if you can get in there with a thin, flat file that is best. Next best is to use some 600 grit paper, fold it a couple times to give it some stiffness and dress the contacts. Just a few swipes should do it.
