New user here. Been reading here a lot over the years and the forum has helped me alot. Looking for advice on replacing my pump motor now. I will post in equipment section.

What I have is a 2hp Hayward Northstar pump that will need a new motor. It seems oversized and is a energy hog. I can't find a variable speed motor that will work as a replacement but would like to get a 2 speed. I will probably keep my single speed timer and use a toggle switch for high when needed. Is there anything else I need to consider like flow to skimmers or priming on startup? just looking for advice or ideas, thanks.
What size is your pool?
16k gallon. I submitted my pool chart, did it not go through? Thanks

Note the correction in your gallons!
A 2 HP pump is way, way too big for your pool. You probably want something like this:

You want the 1HP pump, and you'll want to leave it on low most of the time.

Sounds good, I am looking at just the motor replacement. I can get a AOSmith replacement 1hp 2speed with impeller for under $300 but cant find a variable speed bolt on that will work. BTW thats supposed to be a in ground on my pool chart. Many thanks.

On an 8,000 gallon pool, you'd be better off with a 2 speed pump. The variable speed pumps are all max HP motors, that can be turned down fairly efficiently. But, the 2 speed 1HP is going to as efficient, or more efficient than 2.5HP variable speed, turned way, way down . . . and it's going to be a heck of a lot cheaper and more reliable. Texas doesn't have the lightning Florida does, but putting electronics at the end of an power run outdoors is just asking for problems.

Good point I've heard those vs control boards are expensive if you can get them. We can get zapped by lightning also. I'll get a 2speed. I think the skimmers will be ok with the lower flow at longer run times. Thanks again
