    Default What kind of algae

    What kind of algae can eat up 12 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine and still not reach shock level? I can't see any visible algae,the water is clear. It started with cloudy water after not using the pool for a week. The solar blanket was on and the pump ran it's cycles.The chems were right before the week.
    Is there any truth in having the blanket on and not using the pool that you could smother the pool? Would this play any part in my current water problem. This came from the place we try to avoid!

    I'm using taylor K-2006 test kit with FAS-DPD chlorine test. This morning the test results were
    Chlor = 2.0
    PH= 7.3
    Alk = 100
    CH = 100
    CYA= 60
    I have put 13 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine in the pool so far and still can't get to shock level. I tested the strength of the liquid using a method from another post and it tested OK. What is happening to all this chlorine?

    Does your pool have a really strong chlorine type smell? What is your CC or Combined Chlorine reading? What other chemicals have you used other than bleach? Any algaecide or clarifier or anything else? It would be helpful if you have used anything else to list it along with its' ingredients if possible.

    There is no strong chlorine smell. The water is clear and no visible algae. I have added 2 more gallons of bleach since the last post. I did put 6oz of algimycin 600(poly ethylene dichloride) and one box of borax .The filter pressure is 20psi as it was at last backwash and new DE.I ran out of DPD powderdoing this last test. I have some ordered expect it in a day or two. The only other test I have is an OTO kit that only goes to 5-10.
    chlor=10 ppm CC .5
    PH = 7.8

    It's very unlikely that your 12.5% bleach is 12.5%! For a 23,000 gallon pool, 13 gallons of 12.5% bleach will add about 65 ppm of chlorine.

    Do this:

    1. Complete the Pool Chart Entry Form
    2. Add 4 gallons of your bleach, via the skimmer (remove 110% of chemicals, tabs, debris etc. from skimmer FIRST), with the pump running, in the evening, within 2 hours of sunset.
    3. Wait 1 hour, then test pool FC levels
    4. Test again in the AM, not more than 2 hours after sunrise.

    But . . . if you don't see at least a 15 ppm FC level in the EVENING test . . . that bleach has cooked off. Try again with plain 6% Walmart bleach, but use 8 gallons, instead of 4.

    Update kept adding and got the chlor level to 10ppm.Had to leave for three days when I got back it was at 0,slight visible algae. Got the DPD powder while I was gone.For info I did a bucket test on the 12.5% (10 liters of chlorine free water,1ml of liquid chlorine.Tested at 6+ppm. I followed your advice and did the following:
    8/23 put 5 gallons of 12.5% chlor at 18 ,brushed and vaced
    8/25 chlor at 11ppm
    8/26 lots of swimmers,didn't measure
    8/27 chlor 8.0,PH7.3.alk 125,CA 125

    I want to close the pool before leaves fall here in Ohio. Should I do anything more than my routine winterizing? I'm thinking I have or had some type of algae problem that was eating up the chlorinehad si

    Make sure there are no signs of any algae before you close.
