If you can purchase and match your pump & filter separately, the results will be better.

You might want to look at WaterMom's (long time moderator here) thread -- she just replaced her pool.

I can't personally advice you on AG pool packages.

Thanks Pool Doc. I did read Watermom's thread on her new pool, but couldnt find much information pertaining to pump size (hp), make, and filter type and size. Can someone give me some insight? Im not sure if pumps are automatically paired when you buy a filter or if you can buy a filter and just put the pump beside it. Most of the ones I see come with the pump and filter as a combo. Is this correct?

I guess the real question is what hp pump and what size filter is appropriate for an 18x33x52" pool. I am coming up with approximatly 13,000 gallons of water.

I think that usually, most pool packages come with a filter and pump paired and you sometimes can't make a switch from what comes in the package. These pump/filter combos typically seem to be mismatched --- too powerful pumps paired with too small filters.

For my new pool, I did not buy the full package as I am not replacing my pump and filter. My current pump is a full-rated 1/2hp inground pump. (Years back when I first got into pool ownership, I had either a 3/4 or 1hp --- can't remember. When it died, fellow moderator, Poconos, advised me that i could get by with less and he suggested the pump which I currently have.) I have been using it on my 24 ft AG for several years. The new pool (to be installed soon, but not yet) is a 27ft AG. Poconos seems to think that even with a bigger pool, that this pump will be just fine. I trust his opinion on this.

I am not the pump expert around here by any means, but the volume of your pool is roughly the same volume as my 24ft AG that I am replacing. Not sure if that helps or not with your question but maybe it will. I have a sand filter and I *think* it is 200 lb. filter. I'm not 100% sure about that, but pretty sure.
