    Default Reality check on pool resurfacing and quartzite decking tile

    Hello, I just got a bid to resurface a pool in Kauai that is 16' x 30'. It goes from 3' to 6' deep. It has rounded areas at the ends where the ladders and steps are. The estimated cost to remove and replaster the bottom and sides was a little over $57,000. The cost to install quartzite decking and watertable tile on about 1000 sf was $65,000. This seems to be excessive to me. We live in Kauai and there are only several providers on the island. Can someone help me out with a realistic expectation.

    Thanks, Jim Cherry

    Hi Juliana, and welcome to the forum!

    Forum traffic slows way down this time of year, so it may be several days before you get the responses you're looking for. I am no expert in any way on resurfacing, but I do know that prices very greatly regionally--and you are limited to what providers are available to you. My best advice would be to check with them all and compare among what you have available....you might get much lower price quotes from folks around here, but they're not going to do you much good in Hawaii.

    Hi Juliana;

    There is one way, and only one way, for you to determine what a "realistic" bid is in Hawaii! And that is to call the OTHER contractors there.

    As you already know, everything costs more in Hawaii (except maybe sand and pineapples), so pricing from the mainland is irrelevant, unless you are planning to fly a contractor in from California, Florida or wherever. I know shipping stuff to Hawaii costs a lot; skilled labor is more a problem there, and so on.

    I know it's not what you want to hear, but unless some PoolForum poster who ALSO lives in Hawaii has info for you, there's not much help we can offer you.

    Good luck!
