The symptoms you describe point VERY strongly to a suction side leak, either in piping you replaced or piping you disturbed (moved, jiggled when you installed the new pump.

Keep in mind that, when the pump is running a SUCTION side leak will allow air INto the pipes, rather than letting water leak OUT. Unless you can hear them hissing, suction leaks can be rather hard to find.
