Yeah, a big part of the problem on the Intex pools is the lack of an adequate filter. It sounds like yours made the problem much easier to resolve.

Try adding a little bit of DE powder to your sand filter, through the skimmer or the drain if it doesn't have a skimmer. Do it just after you back-wash. Since it's a smaller pump and filter, start with 1/4 cup, wait 1/2 hour and see if the pressure goes up. Repeat until it goes up 1lb of PSI. This will add to the filter's ability to get even finer stuff. 10# of DE usually can be had for about $8-$10, and will last a sand filter owner several years, at a minimum. Every time you back wash, add the amount you determined raised PSI by 1#. And, if you have a skimmer, get some skimmer socks, which are now (as of last Thursday) about $5 for 4 of them. You can rinse and reuse them until the elastic goes.

Thanks Carl for the tip on DE powder and skimmer sock, I'll have to order some. The only stores I have within a 30 minute drive are Kmart, Lewis Drug, and Walmart and none of them sell the correct pool stuff so Amazon and other websites it is!

PoolDoc - yeah we knew the crappy filter that comes with the pool wasn't going to be enough circulation so we upgraded right away. We have an 18 month old who spends a lot of time in the pool so we didn't want her urine just sitting stagnant in the pool. Bro-inlaw has a smaller version of our pool and is using the filter that came with it and boy does he have problems up the wazoo! Our sand filter was more than the pool itself but we should be able to use the same filter for the next pool we get, as we won't be getting one much bigger than the current one.
