Re: First time adding cya
Don't add it all at once. Maybe a third or fourth of what you think you need. I prefer to put it in an old sock, tie the top and drop it in the skimmer. That way you can backwash as needed. Test it again before adding more.
Re: First time adding cya
I've seen many ways to add CYA, tie it up in socks or pantyhose, pour it directly into the skimmer and let it get trapped in the filter so it dissolves over time, etc.... Why couldn't you simply add it to a bucket of warm/hot water let it dissolve then add to the pool or through the skimmer to disperse it?

For me, that's the way I first tried to add CYA last year. Problem was...it just kind of sat there in the bucket of warm water. Agitating didn't help much. Mostly, I ended up with a bucket of cloudy, white water and a clumped up glob of CYA at the bottom that went through the plumbing as wet flakes.:(
Now, I use the pantyhose trick and throw it in the skimmer where it can take all the time it wants to dissolve, usually not that much for me, maybe 2-4 days. And it IS all dissolved, as there are no flakes left in the pantyhose.
Re: First time adding cya
This post lists a couple of other alternatives for more quickly adding CYA. Obviously, the Dichlor method should be used over time, not all at once, since it adds chlorine (FC) as well as CYA.

Hi!
Here's a picture of our method from last year:

This year we just installed a 33' round & it needs over 5lbs of CYA.
So i am going to try to use something like this method pictured here from PatL34 http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/attachm...0&d=1147012424
I think this is what some of the other posts are referring to.
