Gray Cal-hypo?
Anyone ever have Cal-hypo turn gray? I have a couple pounds of it in one pound bags from last year. I used one and it was white. When mixed in a bucket it turned milky white as usual. Opened another one--it was gray and turned milky gray when mixed in bucket. I'm assuming that this is normal as the chlorine content degrades?

Re: Gray Cal-hypo?
Thanks Mom. I used it anyways. Testing afterwards seems to indicate less ppm's of FC than expected. No untoward aftereffects noticed. Funny thing though. When punching in "gray" and "calhypo" I came across this. Seems a ship caught fire and and a lawsuit was filed against a CalHypo manufacturer. The manufacturer is the same one that made the Calhypo that I asked about. Good thing I threw it in the pool--eh? :)

Re: Gray Cal-hypo?
My experience has been that cal hypo gets gray and lumpy as it gets old.
Try to avoid storing it from year to year! But if you do, using it in the pool is the best way to dispose of it.

Re: Gray Cal-hypo?
I've kept the stuff for up to 3 years or so when I wasn't using it that much and never saw any color shift or obvious decrease in strength. Original container tightly closed in a poolhouse that does get hot in the summer.

Yep, gray and lumpy. It was packaged in 1lb. bags. Sold as SUPER SHOCK-IT. I was always sort of a frugal guy, so I didn't want to waste it. This forum is a perfect fit for me. Even more so now given my current economic situation.

Re: Gray Cal-hypo?
Al, that may be related to the "warm" temperatures up your way!
Dave Knoop, Olin's pool product manager for years, told me they figured 3 - 5% loss per year for stored sealed containers. That's an AWFUL lot of fumes. But, as you note, the clumpy gray stuff has usually been opened and gotten damp.
You know, he's retired now. I wonder if he'd do an interview for PF? I'm pretty sure he's still living in Athens. (Tennesee). He's one of those "d### Yankees", ie the kind that moved here and stayed. ;)
