    Springfield, MO.

Dollar General is selling their DG brand of 6% 182 oz. for $2.00. Sale runs 8-1 - 8-8. Two bottles of 6% 96oz. at $1.00 would be a better deal, but often those $1.00 bottles are 3%. I prefer the 182's simply for less recycle.

I went looking for some deals on bleach today. Some stores did not list strength on their house brands. Its probably safe to assume its 3% bleach when not indicated on the label. At Lowe's 10% strength on one gallon size was $4.78. At Big Lots strength not listed(3%) 3 quart size $1.48. Dollar General was the only place I found 6% strength. The 142 oz. size which is 1 gallon-14 ounces was $2.00. Their 3 quart 6% strength size was $1.00. At Dollar Tree a real one gallon size strength not listed(3%?) was $1.00. In summary make sure of the size the container when comparing prices. In just the 4 stores I visited three different sizes were available 3qt(96oz), 1 gallon(128oz) and 142oz

Since my local Save-A-Lot closed (96 oz, 6% bleach for $1.00), I did a quick survey in my local area (Arlington, TX) to find a substitute source. Here's what I found (oz/$/%):

    Walgreens (96/1.99/6)
    Aldi (96/0.99/6)
Dollar Tree (96/1.00/?) "So White" brand
Dollar General (128/1.00/?) "Top Job" brand
    Big Lots (96/1.50/6)
Big Lots (128/1.50/?) "Top Job" brand
    Family Dollar (96/1.50/6)
    Family Dollar (174/2.50/6)

At just over 1 cent per oz. of 6% bleach, I will be buying from Aldi (you have to pay cash, though.)

Just be careful to check for the percentage--the last few times I looked at Big Lots and Dollar General, they were only 3%. NOt listed on the label, so I had to call the company to get the percentage.

Jan, you and I think alike. When I modded this in, that was the exact advice I was going to give this poster -- to be aware that some places sell 3% instead of 6%. You just beat me to it.

I found some $4 128oz liquid shock at Menard's here in Wichita, KS. It is 12.5% strength.

I buy 12.5% Liquid Chlorine in 5 gallon carboys for $17 each. Since this store's LC regularly tests at 14%, I figure it's the equivalent of buying 6% bleach at $1.46/gallon.

But it doesn't beat 4 gallons of 12.5% for $9! Here, it costs more than DOUBLE that for gallon jugs of 12.5%.

I have an Aldi up the highway selling 6% for $.99 for the 96oz bottles. I watched the impact on my FC as I started using it and it is working like it should in terms of raising the level in the pool, so I am pretty sure it is really 6% (pardon my skepticism, it's a Jersey thing). Not bad. Bought 10 cases. Got the classic "that's a lot of bleach" from the register person, so I said, "it's between Memorial Day and Labor Day, I wear a lot of white!"

Anyway, I think that's a little cheaper overall than the carboys, but that's real math?

If you want to test your chlorine, fill a 5 gallon bucket with 10 liters of tap water (that's 5 2-liter soda bottles full) You may want to check the FC level of the tap water first. Then add 10ml of bleach to the bucket. Most drug stores sell eyedroppers with a 10ml marking. Mix and test the bucket's FC. It well be the same as the concentration of your bleach, minus, of course, the FC level of the tap water.

Yeah, it's a Jersey thing. We had a less-than-honest contractor give a bad check to the supply house and they came to ME looking for their money--because that's where they delivered his material. He took the money we gave him up front for materials and used it for something else. Later, I Googled him and we learned he had spent a year in jail for taking people's down-payments and...keeping them. He actually completed the job OK, but he knew I was seriously...ticked. And, no, I didn't have to pay the supply house. My GC had wondered why he ALWAYS left his car door open. It became obvious: to make a quick get-away!

BTW, if you ever read Phillip Roth novel "The Plot Against America", he mentions Richie "The Boot" Boiardo, a very real person...his house isn't too far away. I know a coupla guys who knew him when they were kids. Supposedly, the Boiardos were the model for the Sopranos! His grandson is now a respectable orthopedic surgeon.
