I'm starting my search for an above ground oval pool. As I've called around to some of my local dealers, they weren't too friendly. All that being said, is one model better than another? Or should I just be willing to spend a few thousand, and they'd all be the same?

FYI, it seems like doughboy has the best above ground pools.

When I shop, what types of questions should I ask / look for?

Still have not purchased. I may have to take out the small intek for the summer. But if I can get a decent enough deal, I'll go for a bigger pool.

Maybe go ahead and look at see what kind of deals are out there and then come back and post with info. I have a feeling that there really isn't a great deal of difference in the pools themselves but you want to get a good pump and filter that are appropriately sized for whatever pool you buy. Then, maybe people can comment on what you are considering. Just an idea. Sorry you haven't gotten any replies .........

When you shop around, see who has the the best structural support. If you can find out the actual metal thickness of the side wall, the top rail, the vertical upright columns, how many vertical columns are there between the different pools etc. Simply put, bigger, thicker, wider, sturdier, and more is better. Compare the bottom rail that sits in the ground. Is it wider, is it coated, is it galvanized? Do the vertical uprights require additional supports?

I had an 18' pool that bulged all the way around the side wall. The Pool store came out and install additional supports in the uprights because the initial ones were too thin.

Liners are another issue. See what liner thickness comes standard with the pool kit, and ask if there is a thicker upgrade. 20 mil or thicker is best. Some liners have a 20 mil bottom, but only have a 15 mil sidewall. Is it a traditional overlap liner or the new rail type?

I will be the first to tell you that some of this information may not be readily available, I would stay away from "DEALS" from unknown manufacturers. I like my Doughboy, but doing your homework may save you a little anguish in the long run.

Saw a good deal on the Oasis at Branch Brook. It has a resin ledge and structure, with "nickel steel".

Having never bought a pool from Branch Brook I can't say whether they are good or bad. We've bought some lawn furniture there and it has been pretty good.

I'm in NJ, where Branch Brook is from, I think, but it's now part of Namco, which is in many states. There are many pool stores here particularly on the Rt 22 corridor and they are all pretty much the same. There's one there which, while not cheap, doesn't push things like calcium to vinyl pool owners, but the rest are typical.
