Though I can't see turning the pump off as temporarily alleviating the problem - any chance the impeller has a bunch -O- crud in it? (you mention a lot of pollen and seed pods)

Having done construction and service for 4 pool companies in 4 states starting in 1988, what I know about pools could fill a couple of books - what I don't know could fill libraries
I've been thinking of this one too. When you kill the pump do you hear any gurgling like there may be trapped air somewhere? I don't understand how it would happen but if you get any air bubbling up from the bottom of the filter that would churn up the surface but I can't see it taking a few hours to settle and block again. Also sounds crazy but if you have a recirculate mode, try that and see if the symptom occurs. That would rule out all but the filter if it does not happen. Truly an odd one.
