leak under pump

My Hayward Pump assembly has a slight leak ( damp area under pump) and is making a hissing sound. The water flow through the pool lines seems fine and the pressure gauge may be slightly high at 22 PSI (usually 18 PSI) Does that indicate a defective shaft seal or some other defective part?

The hissing sems odd, the fact you can even hear something when the pump is running. I have a 12 year old superpump that leaks around the big O-ring gasket in the pump housing every spring when I first start it up. Very slight dribble. I just torque the 4 bolts to 13 ft-lb and it solves the problem for another season. If you can see exactly where the dribble is coming from that would help. Could very well be the shaft seal.

While I'm usually the first to say "bad shaft seal" (SP 1600 Z 2 ), I like Al's approach.

If you can look closely enough, you can see if the water is coming from between the housing and the seal plate or from behind the mounting plate (they're close together and it's usually hard to get a good enough angle to tell the difference) - I'd do as Al suggests and try tightening the bolts before changing the seal assembly

I had a similar problem last year towards the end of my pool season, and left it go till the end of the season. Hindsight, probably should have done something sooner, for I had a pretty good squeal coming from the pump last year.

This is a pretty easy fix. I got a complete seal rebuilt kit from the pool store, cost about $36, and took about 1/2hr.

The main seal (ceramic) was pretty shot, all looks good now.
