Default Just replaced liner and pool is filling up

I really want to start off using the BBB method. I experimented with it last year and saw that I did save a lot of money by not listening to the guy at Leslies. We bought this house with the pool in tip top shape and I basically just maintained it. This year I am starting fresh. I know that the alkalinity (baking soda)needs to be raised first, then PH (Borax), then chlorine (12% concentrated Bleach), right? How much of each should I start with?

    22,000 gallon / Vinyl

Thanks in advance for any direction.

I'm so sorry--I never saw this post until this morning. Did you get your pool started up okay?

    I didn't see it either.

Really, you start by testing your water.
You also want to remove any debris like sticks, leaves, small dead animals, etc.
Start vacuuming and brushing ASAP. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, use that.

Your first adjustment is pH. Get that right. I like to be in the lower 7's rather than the higher 7's as chlorine works better.

Your second is to shock the heck out of your pool, with the shock level set by whatever your test showed your CYA (stabilizer) level to be.

For a 22,000 gal pool, (you can use 20K for bleach guestimates) 1 gallon of 12% will add an FC of 6ppm (for each 10,000 gallons, one gallon of bleach will add its concentration to the water: 5.25% adds 5.25 ppm, 6% adds 6ppm, and 12% add 12ppm)

Then adjust your CYA level to where you want it. This will take a MINIMUM of 48 hours.

Finally, you can worry about T/A. However, if it was really low and your pH was low, just adding Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate--not Baking Soda), which is the same chem as pH Up! will raise your T/A as well.

But T/A should be the last of the 4 chem levels you worry about.

I rarely measure hardness in my vinyl pool--about as often as I measure copper and salt levels--max, once a season.

I've got it right where it needs to be, now I just need to maintain it. I just replaced the old faded liner with this cool blue on and also added steps in the shalllow end. Really impressed with the liner over the steps, definitely worth it.
