Default Market for old heat pumps?

My 6 year old heat pump needs a $1500 repair, so I'll be replacing it with a propane heater. Does anyone buy and refurbish old heat pumps, or do I need to pay someone to haul it away?

I would not pay anyone, there are plenty of people that will come and take it for free for the scrap metal value.

The plumber/hvac company that installed the new heater removed the old one. The installer told me that they get $40 for the old one for the scrap metal.
