There is a shaft seal assembly, not the plate, that's probably the culprit. That assembly should be right behind the impeller. Looking at the manual for my Hayward the impeller is a standard right hand thread. i.e. counter clockwise to remove it. There is also a flat on the back end of the motor shaft for a wrench to keep the shaft from turning. You should find the manual to be sure of yours and avoid damaging anything.
