You can adapt up or down, but be aware that thinner hoses have more resistance giving faster water speed, higher pressures, but less volume and thicker ones give less resistance, slower water speeds, lower pressure and greater volume. Each, selected correctly can have their own advantages.
Thanks Carl. Actually they are both 1 1/2" openings, but the union OD is larger on the hayward. I was able to use a buttress to adapt my regular hoses and cut off valves. All is well now....well...except for a leak around my DE filter that I cannot figure out. O'ring is in perfect condition and I thought I had everything seated correctly.
