I think you could get away with a 3/4 HP motor with no problems (a 2 speed pump, while costing more initially, would save $$ over time) Please remember that a larger filter will be better for the pool. It's quite possible to fix the equipment you have - we can talk you through it with a little more info.
I don't know why your pump and filter failed so soon, but it could be because it wasn't properly maintained - if you have any questions about the use and care for your pool/ system - simply ask us and we'll do our best to keep your pool running hassle- freeIf you plan to replace the filter , there are pro's and con's for each of the 3 types and the good folks here are always willing to help you decide which type filter will best suit your needs.
