    Default New pool liner problem

I had my pool liner replaced last week and filled it up with my hose (city water). We are in a drought here, and I am being charged a premium price since I will be using well over 6000 gallons this month. Soon after it was full I started losing water. I could not find the source and since it is almost 30 years old I was thinking it might be a big deal. So I called the leak pro (a great guy, and it was fun to watch him do his thing) and he came out yesterday ($275). The problem is the brand new liner is separating at the seam in a corner.

The leak pro called the manufacturer (large reputable company) and they are replacing the liner 100% with labor. We took pics and he patched it for now (half the water is gone). He asked them about water reimbersement and they said that they don't do that. I am sick about losing all that water and having to start over again. Water delivery would cost about $900 and that is what I would like them to pay. I think they should pay for the leak pro, as well, but I at least want the water.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

Most liner warranties specifically state they aren't responsible for replacement expenses, so I doubt you'll get anywhere.

I've only had one seam failure in my many many liner replacements.

Compensation for the water wasn't in the fine print.

Did your municipality know you were filling a pool? Because some discount the water if that is the case. Sometimes rates are based on the fact the water is discharged into the city's drainage and treatment (if any) system. If the water never makes it to where it costs the city more money to deal with it, they sometimes lower the rate while your filling the pool. Or pro-rate it some how.

My leak specialist said this is only the second one he has seen in his career. It was the last thing he checked, and he was very surprised.

I called the city to get permission to fill the pool and asked for a reduced rate but they said no. I think they are losing money from the mandatory water restrictions over the past year so they aren't giving anyone a break.

Thanks for the input, I thought about just keeping the patched liner for now and topping it off but my installer said he is afraid it will continue happening.

I am going to ask, can't hurt, and will let you know what comes of it.

If the liner manufacturer wasn't paying for the installation of the new liner, patching the old one is not a bad way to go.

Most likely any areas that would have separated under the stress of filling the pool with water, would have by now. In fact the seam that gave probably wasn't "sealed" to begin with. So it's a good chance it's clear sailing from here on out.

The benefit being, is that you still get the liner itself (the second replacement one). Store and use if for your first liner replacement. Vinyl and materials in general only get more expensive. If the average life span of a liner is 12-15 years for example, that could calculate into quite a savings.

But if the manufacturer is footing the bill for the installation of the replacement and you want a piece of mind, then by all means have it done.

Here's a tip: If you order the same style liner. and have it installed. Save a few section of the old one, to use as patch material in the future. Vinyl can be used with most of the underwater glues that are contained in patch kits. But the vinyl or material provided in those kits is never very good looking as a patch. If you match the pattern perfectly from a piece of an identical liner, it almost vanishes.
