the cover has come off our main drain. It occurs to me that I either need to learn how to scuba dive or I need a very long snorkel (9 feet or so). Does such a thing exist?

9 feet underwater you won't be able to breath through a snorkle--the water pressure on your chest cavity will be too great. From what I understand, every underwater breathing apparatus requires a pressure regulator, so the pressure of the air you are breathing matches the water pressure around you.
Your alternative is to work in short 45 second units, coming up for air.

I've done it twice now and although it took some time I actually had fun and was happy to not have to drain the pool.

I was a moderate smoker previous to and during the 10 years I was in in the business.
The first time I tried I thought there was no way I could do it. I did it, and it only got easier as familiarity with the products and mechanisms grew.
What ever you do, make sure the system isn't on, and that there's no way it could come on (timer). I don't think we have to get into the "D" word, so I won't.
If you can, above water familiarize yourself with what your doing. Do you have an old cover, or drain lying around from a repair?
The biggest problem your going to encounter is one you probably never thought of, namely staying down longer. Your buoyancy is going to surprise you. Your going to find yourself wishing you could stay down at a greater depth longer and more easily.
I don't recommend a weight to anyone who is not dive certified, but if you do use one, don't strap it on in any way, just hold it. So as to be able to easily let go of it.
Oh, and a good quality mask is a huge help. Watch the screw drivers if it's vinyl. Don't get all stabby and what not.
I'd wish you luck but you don't need it, you just need to phyce your self up and do it. Which I bet dollars to doughnuts you can.
A handy way to help yourself stay down is one of those plastic coated dumbells. It works just like a handle on the bottom. You could also use a milk jug full of sand or gravel.
