    Default Problem with Pump Motor

I opened my pool a few weeks ago and everything was fine. Today my pump motor is just making a hum noise. It sounds like the motor would if there was no water in there. I have double checked everything and made sure the water path was not blocked. Everything is fine there.

Can my motor be burnt out? Is there anything else I can check? I would think if its burnt out then it wouldnt turn on at all.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks,
    Frank

I'm a little confused. Is there water in the pump basket? If something broke, like the impeller came off the motor shaft, then the motor will gradually slow down when power is switched off. It will coast to a stop because there is no load on the motor. Same as no water in the basket. No load. A normally functioning pump will stop real quick. Keep us posted.

Yes water was in the basket and all was ok there.

After more research I found some things about the centifugal switch. It was stuck. Once I played with that a bit the pump came on.

    All is ok now.

    Thanks

Great to hear it was easy. I wonder how many new pumps are sold to replace a pump with a simple fix? In your case if the switch was stuck closed the armature would turn but at a slow speed and the motor would eventually smoke, or the thermal cutout would kick in, or a breaker would pop. If the contacts were not making contact the shaft wouldn't turn at all and the motor would just sit there and hum. Happy ending.
