Yes water was in the basket and all was ok there.
After more research I found some things about the centifugal switch. It was stuck. Once I played with that a bit the pump came on.
All is ok now.

Great to hear it was easy. I wonder how many new pumps are sold to replace a pump with a simple fix? In your case if the switch was stuck closed the armature would turn but at a slow speed and the motor would eventually smoke, or the thermal cutout would kick in, or a breaker would pop. If the contacts were not making contact the shaft wouldn't turn at all and the motor would just sit there and hum. Happy ending.
