PoolPilot Digital Total Control Temp Sensor Location with Heater

Just purchased the unit. The question is where to place the probe as we use a heat pump heater – heat sensing issue? Would it be best to locate the sensor before the bypass valve? If this is an issue what solutions can be suggested? The overall flow is 55 GPM and a bypass valve directs 45 GPM to the heater via the bypass valve. Would we need to run the return from the heater to a location after the SWG? The only problem I see with that is there may not be enough GPMs going to the SWG. The bypass could be turned down to 35 GPM, thus giving 20 GPM to the SWG. Or does one place an inline heat probe and adjust the control unit for the variance?

Not sure of the question. There is no separate temperature probe. The tri-sensor assembly has the temp, flow and salt sensors and is mounted in the manifold assembly.
With the total control, the manifold should be plumbed before the diverter valve that selects between the pool and spa.

Which temp sensor are you refering to?

My apologies for not being clearer in the question. As we have a heat pump and no spa would not the reading be false if located on the return line - in other words the temperature reading would be too high? If so where should we locate the probe? I hope this makes it clearer and thank you for your quick response.

And yes it the pool, does get cold at 1000 ft elevation when the trade winds blow at 16 mph to 24 mph, pretty much year round. Except today when we had no wind and vog from the Kilauea volcanoe sitting over Honolulu all day - ala Los Angeles on a smoggy day. Yuck.

Also we have the SC-60 but only a 1 1/2" line is this ok if we convert the short section of 13" to 14" to 2" and then go back to 1 1/2"?

The delta T (change in temperature from the inlet to the outlet) from a heat pump is not drastic enough to affect the automatic temperature compensation. It should be about 3-5 degrees. A gas heater would be about 7 - 10 degrees and would affect the temp compensation.
I would not worry about it with your set up.

With a gas heater, if you position the manifold at least 4' after the heater outlet, there should be enough dissipation of the heat to not affect the temp compensation that much.

You're fine going from your 1.5" lines up to 2" then back down.

Once again thank you for the quick reply.

This is great news and yes it further away than your figure plus it remixes with the pool's unheated water.

Have all the equipment and additional equipement tools needed to install. The electrician, as we need to upgrade and relocate the box, says he will be out here Wednesday. Will let you know how it is working after a week.
