All mine is in the full sun on the south side without any ill effects, you may get some fading of the cover after a number of years, but I doubt the heat from the sun will damage the motor - it runs hotter that that just on it's own.
I had to replace my pump motor yesterday (2HP). All my equipment is on the south side of my house, so it gets sun most all day and also gets the afternoon sun on its' western exposed side.
Would there be any benefit to trying to shade the motor? If so, any ideas on how to do so? I know the motor needs good ventilation regardless. TIA!

Somewhere on this site probably 3-4 month ago someone posted a link to a small pump cover that you can buy. As I recall it was some fiberglass or plastic thing open at both ends for ventilation. Keeping the sun, rain, and weather off the thing is always better. Running in the rain is probably the worst thing you can do. Although they are designed for outdoor use the moisture that gets sucked in by normal cooling does corrode or oxidize the metal parts making it a dog to ever take things apart.

No jury debate. Less heat, less problems.
