If chlorine is kept at proper level, is shocking ever necessary?

CYA is about 80, which was ideal according to the test strip that the pool store used to test it. I added a couple bottles of regular liquid bleach as you suggested.

Those are all forms of chlorine. We really need to know your cya reading...
