Default Just used Polyquat for the first time

I think we've killed a small algea bloom in our pool and used polyquat for the first time to. Used the recommended amount at 7am but forgot to change the setting from filter to circulate. I won't be home until 3pm. Should I add more polyquat and change to circulate when I get home or just change to circulate and see what happens? Thanks. I've never used this stuff before.

You should be fine. Just make sure you keep your chlorine up - sometimes, if not all of the algae is dead, it can become a problem again. A good way to know is to check your chlorine after sundown, and then before the sun hits the pool. If the chlorine drops, you still need to shock.

Thanks. So should I turn everything off to let it settle?

Duh, sorry. I meant to say that I used floc and forgot to change the setting from filter to circulate. I thought I would use the floc, let everything settle and then vac. Should I not do this? (As you can probably tell we're new pool owners.)

If the floc is already in the pool, your best bet is to probably shut the pump off, let it all settle to the bottom, and vac it all to waste.

So it doesn't matter that if was filtering instead of circulating?

No, it will still work. Just turn off the filter and let it sit overnight, some floc directions say to wait 24 hours - it depends on how cloudy the water was, and what it looks like the next morning. When you vacuum, vacuum very slowly so the vacuum doesn't swirl it around back into the water. After you vacuum, if the water is still cloudy, turn the filter off all night again and repeat.

Actually, when I got home at 3, the water looks totally clear. Not much stuff on the bottom. Checked the chlorine and now I think maybe we still have algae. FC is 1.6. 24 hours ago it was at 3.0. CC is between .4 and .6. Do you think I should bring the chlorine up to a high level after the sun goes down and check it in the morning to see if it holds? Will the algaecide and floc I put in have an effect on the consumption? I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Thanks.

We will be able to help you much better if you post your numbers:

    Free Chlorine
    Combined Chlorine
    Ph
    Alkalinity
    Calcium
    Cya

The reason is we need to know how high your chlorine should be according to how much cya you have in the pool. This way we can tell if it is sun eating up the chlorine or algae. One good way is to see if you use any chlorine overnight. If you do, then the chlorine is fighting something. Don't feel overwhelmed - we can help, and we can help you learn all about your own pool , and how to keep it clean and clear
