Default How to fix cracked valve?

    Hello,

The intake pvc valve that I turn to open and close the skimmer and drain has a hairline crack. When the pump is running it is pulling air through the crack with the water. Any suggestions as to the best way to patch this?

    Thanks,

I'd try JB Weld or pure silicone caulk.

Repairs on a valve should only be considered a temporary measure...the valve should be replaced, IMHO.

Is gthe valve a generic Home Depot valve or something more expensive? Where is the crack and most important, what causes it to crack? Being on the suction side and the answers to the above questions, you may be able to fix it. But probably as Waterbear said, only temporarily.

If you happen to have the smelly 2 component pvc glue, you could try to apply this sparingly over the crack. Even CA glue (loctite) might help - for a great selection of CA glues see www.leevalley.com - some are gap filling and have helped me in many repairs around the house.

But I agree, this should only be a temporary fix. A hose clamp (if it fits where the crack is) might relieve the mechanical stress on the crack - also temporarily.

If I had your problem, I would consider using this product. Here is the link:

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions.

Poconos: It's called a 3 port diverter valve which was plumbed when the pool was installed about 3 years ago. The crack is on the side of the valve...it may have been a design flaw. The valve runs about $60.

Gverntz3: Thanks for the link!!! Looks like great stuff if it can live up to the claims made on the site. How long ago did you make your repair?

Several of you suggested changing the valve. This is without a doubt the best solution. My hesitation is that the intake hoses only have about a foot from where they come out of the ground to where they join the valve making it difficult but not impossible to work with. If I try Gverntz suggestion I'll post the results of this product.

Again, thanks for the advice everyone. It is much appreciated!

Have not used the product, but it sure looks like it's a great product to use for PVC. Just waiting for something to break to try it!!!
