Default Phos-Away and Pool Pizazz newby questions

I am new to this forum and have been "pooled" for the last several years. Going to make the jump to treating the pool on my own this year. We have an 18,000 gallon above ground pool and have been using Phos-Away and Pool Pizazz in our pool.

What is the consensus here on these items? I get the impression that these also are a general waste of money. I was told the pool pizazz keeps a scum line from developing along the edge of the pool liner and water level.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't know what Pool Pizazz is, and so far I've been unable to find it on the internet, but I can't imagine that it will do anything that proper levels of Cl, pH, and TA won't do, and MUCH cheaper! As for the Phos-away, the general consensus is that it is unnecessary unless you have algae that absolutely cannot be eradicated by proper shocking.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on the decision to take control of your own pool--you'll be amazed at how easy it can be!
