We've got a nylon knee-high stocking working as an impromptu
Not wearing panty hose.. but I am interested in maybe attaching to the return in my 24foot AG pool.. I have seen people mention this.. but can't find anywhere about:
What exactly to use?
How to attach to return?
Thanks for your help.
Swimming pool.. or camper? Swimming pool.. or camper? ...what the heck.. buy both.

AG BF 13.5'x23.5'x54" (wups) Diamond Star (Wil-bar) purchased 5/30/2007 from sunenterprises.com. 2hp pump + 150lb sand filter (both WaterWay combo) using 75lbs zeobrite + SWG.
Dug and built ourselves in ~30hrs by ~7/4 thanks to PF (esp. hrdennis,nwmnmom,matt4x4,Waste,CarlD, &others). ~$5,500 total cost.
I've read threads where knee highs are being used as skimmer socks and go into the skimmer basket to catch the fine stuff before it gets into the filter.

<finishing initial post :-)>
We've got a nylon stocking working as an impromptu skimmer sock.
1. Remove skimmer basket
TIP: If skimmer basket is gets stuck in your skimmer now is a good time to sand the outer edge a little to give it some room.
2. Put the stocking in the basket
3. Stretch lip of stocking around edge of the skimmer basket rim so there is about .5" to 1" of overhang past the basket rim
4. (optional) Place couple 1" rocks in basket on top of stocking to keep stocking from floating up.
5. Install skimmer basket back into skimmer.
6. SANITY CHECK: Is there any way the stocking or rocks could get past the skimmer basket and get sucked directly into your pump?
If yes then you didn't install it properly. Take off and fix the problem.
7. Turn on pump and watch the bugs and other small stuff start getting caught!
YES, there will be some extra stocking material in the middle. I just ignore it. As long as you don't significantly block water flow through the basket you should be fine.
IMPORTANT: If you are using a skimmer sock or stocking you should check it every day or two... especially when you start using one. Too much crud started to pull my stocking through the skimmer basket grill once.

Maybe you all missed my mention of the "RETURN".. Not interested in usage as a skimmer sock.. How do I attach the panty hose.. or knee hi (or whatever is best to use).. to the RETURN? (not the skimmer)
Swimming pool.. or camper? Swimming pool.. or camper? ...what the heck.. buy both.
Why on earth would you want to? is your filter putting something back into the pool it shouldn't? That could be the only reason I can think of that someone would want to put something on the return...Then I would say its time to fix the filter.....
Beats driving to the lake!

Not sure about my filter.. that's why I want to put the hose on the return.. to see if I get anything.
Geeze.. it takes so many posts.. to get one answer.

I've seen a commercial product filter bag for the returns but have not read about a homebrew alternative. Knee highs are thin, if you cut off the thicker part near the ankle maybe it is thin enough to screw right into the socket.

Sometimes. But, there are a lot of nice people here who take their time to try and help. We certainly appreciate all of our posters who are willing to help!
Chuck, you can secure the nylon hose to the return with a rubber band. I use knee highs and secure them by the reinforced top so that there is plenty of material left in the pool to collect whatever may be bypassing the filter and still have enough room so that the pump doesn't blow a partially filled stocking off of the inlet (thereby ruining the test)
I hope this is more in line with what you were asking![]()
